The EcoLogoTM Program addresses challenges by establishing strict limits on toxicity, VOCs, toxic chemicals, and biodegradability. The net environmental benefit will be a reduction in human health impact, less potential for smog formation and diminished aquatic toxicity.
To be authorized to carry the EcoLogo, carpet and upholstery care products must:
- Be effective and safe to use (not labelled as corrosive).
- Include detailed instructions for proper use and disposal.
- Not be formulated with:
- propellants,
- aromatic or halogenated solvents,
- glycol ethers or their acetates (ethylene glycol monomethyl ether, ethylene glycol monoethyl ether, ethylene glycol monobutyl ether, ethylene glycol monopropyl ether),
- alkylphenol ethoxylate surfactants (APEOS),
- ethylene diaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA),
- fluorinated surfactants,
- phosphorus-based detergents,
- fluorescent dyes, microbicides, or fragrances,
- chemicals classified as being carcinogenic or causing developmental or reproductive toxicity,
- chemicals classified as an endocrine disruptor or an asthmagen, or
- organic ingredients that are bioaccumulating;
- Not be in a disposable wipe format;
- If formulated with bacteria or enzymes, comply with the New Substance Notification Regulations, and use only those bacterial cultures that are derived from a Biosafety Level 1 ATCC microbial culture (or equivalent);
- Contain no more than 0.1% by weight VOCs for cleaners and 8.0% by weight for spot stain removers;
- Demonstrate low toxicity:
- extraction cleaners : EC50 greater than 10,000 mg/l for microorganisms, and LD50 greater than 5,000 mg/kg for mammals,
- shampoo and pre-spray cleaners : EC50 greater than 15 mg/l for crustaceans, and LD50 greater than 5,000 mg/kg for mammals,
- spot and stain removers: EC50 greater than 3500 ì g/l for microorganisms, and LD50 greater than 4,000 mg/kg for mammals; and
- Be readily biodegradable.
