Accommodation facilities refer to any business establishment that offers accommodation to guests as the primary service offering. This includes large hotels, motels, and bed and breakfast establishments. Unless a comprehensive program of continual environmental improvement is in place, the operation of these facilities may result in increased energy consumption, water usage, chemical and material consumption and solid waste generation. These, in turn, may lead to decreased indoor air quality, non-renewable material depletion, increased landfill burden, and impacts to wildlife and aquatic species.

The EcoLogoTM Program addresses these challenges by establishing strict requirements for developing a comprehensive program of continual environmental improvement by using best practices. The net environmental benefit is a reduction in solid waste generation, energy and water consumption, and chemical emissions.

To be authorized to carry the EcoLogo, accommodation facilities must:

  • Receive a minimum overall score of 70% on the Audubon Green Leaf ™ Survey;
  • Attain a minimum score of 60% in each Green Leaf performance area;
  • Provide evidence of implementing specific best practices; and
  • Include provision for public consultation when the accommodation facility is located in an environmentally sensitive area.
