Marine oil absorbents are used to contain drips and spills of oil and other hydrocarbons in aquatic environments such as marinas. These materials often take the form of foams, cushions, socks and booms. They may be toxic, or release the hydrocarbons they are meant to contain. This, in turn, may lead to human health impacts, and increased mortality of fish and other aquatic organisms
The EcoLogoTM Program addresses these challenges by establishing strict requirements for toxicity and efficacy. The net environmental benefit will be reduced human health impacts, less potential for smog formation, and diminished aquatic toxicity.
To be authorized to carry the EcoLogo, marine oil absorbents must:
- Be effective, and be accompanied with instructions for proper use and disposal;
- Have low aquatic toxicity (LC50 greater than 1,000 mg/l for fish); and
- Not leach the absorbed hydrocarbons.
