Adhesives are used for joining material surfaces together, and are widely used in construction, repair and manufacturing operations. They may release volatile and toxic chemicals, which in turn, may lead to human health impacts and photochemical smog formation. The EcoLogoTM Program addresses these challenges by establishing strict requirements for volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The net environmental benefit will be reduced human health impacts, and less potential for smog formation.
To be authorized to carry the EcoLogo, adhesives must:
- Be effective and safe to use;
- Be accompanied by detailed instructions for proper use and disposal in order to minimize health concerns and maximize performance;
- Not be formulated with:
- aromatic or halogenated solvents,
- formaldehyde, and
- toxic metals, including but not limited to cadmium, hexavalent chromium, lead, and mercury, or their compounds; and
- Not contain more than 5% VOCs by weight.
