Sealants and caulking compounds are used to protect against moisture penetration, to provide weatherproofing and to maintain structural integrity. They may release volatile and toxic chemicals, which in turn may lead to human health impacts, and photochemical smog formation.
The EcoLogoM Program addresses these challenges by establishing strict requirements for volatile organic compounds (VOCs).The net environmental benefit will be reduced human health impacts, and less potential for smog formation.
To be authorized to carry the EcoLogoM, sealants and caulking compounds must:
- Be effective and safe to use.;
- Be accompanied by detailed instructions for proper use and disposal in order to minimize health concerns and maximize performance;
- Not be formulated with:
- aromatic or halogenated solvents,
- formaldehyde,
- fibrous talc or asbestos, and
- toxic metals, including but not limited to mercury, lead, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, barium, or their compounds (except barium sulphate); and
- Not contain more than 5% VOCs by weight.
